Disney have announced that filming began on June 13th in the UK for the live action film Maleficent, about the famous villain from Sleeping Beauty. Details on the film are still scarce, but this photo of Angelina Jolie in full Maleficent makeup sure has wet our appetite for the film, not due to hit screens till March 14th, 2014.
The film is marks the directorial debut of Robert Stromberg, who previously won Academy Awards for his production design on Avatar and Disney’s previous dip into the cartoon-turned-live-action realm, Alice in Wonderland. Along with Jolie, the films stars include Elle Fanning (Aurora), Sharlto Copley (Stefan), and Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville as the three fairies.

The movie will certainly look fabulous. I have high hopes for how the rest will turn out, but if nothing else it’ll look great.
Yeah, just have to hope that a production designer at the reigns doesn’t mean we get more style than substance. Looking pretty is great, but Sleeping Beauty is one of my all time favorite films, and Maleficent my favorite villain…so my expectations may be high.
At least it’s not Tim Burton doing it; a few years ago after Alice in Wonderland he was attached to the project. We all know how that would have looked and turned out, so I think at least it has a better shot now. I do wonder sometimes, though, if some things aren’t just better left alone.
