Need a new show? One to catch up with and then continue watching as the seasons progress? Do you want something Totally Awesome that has proved itself the first season and can only get better? Then this is the edition for you. The shows below are a mix of fantasy, graphic novel, blood and gore and witty comedy so there is sure to be something that grabs your attention and holds it.

1) Game of Thrones

Stats: One season of 10 episodes that aired on HBO. The second season is fast approaching and the trailers have looked epic! (spoilers in the trailer if you have not seen the first season).

Ned Stark

Sean Bean as Eddard Stark

Starring: Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage and a ton of other people that are amazing.

Why you might have missed it: It’s on HBO.

Summary: Based on George R.R. Martin’s book series A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones is an amazing fantasy series set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. The story focuses on the noble families of Westeros, mainly the Starks, the Lannisters and the Targaryens, and the battles and intrigue that happen between them. It has a host of characters (thus the need for a Who’s Who) that have intertwined lives. There is sex, blood, gore and intrigue but the focus is on political machinations of the noble families. It is brilliant storytelling and everyone has a different favorite character (mine is Arya Stark). I guarantee you’ll be hooked after the first episode.

Why it is AWESOME: First off, Sean Bean as Ned Stark is fantastic. Secondly, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister is also kind of amazing and emphatically earned that Emmy and Golden Globe for the performance. The episodes stick closely to the books, so I’ve been told. It is a sweeping epic that is surprisingly easy to get enthralled with. I know that I couldn’t stop watching them. The second series promises to be as fantastic as the first so now is the time to jump on the bandwagon.

How can you see it?: The episodes are on demand via HBO and also on HBO Go.

2) Once Upon a TimeOnce Upon A Time title card

Stats: Season one is currently airing on ABC. It is on Sundays at 8pm.

Starring: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Josh Dallas, Jared S. Gilmore, Raphael Sbarge, Jamie Dornan, Robert Carlyle

Why you might have missed it: The promos for it looked totally cheesy.

Summary: In the little town of Storybrooke, Maine, a young boy named Henry realizes there is something strange going on, namely, that fairytale characters have been supplanted from his book into the town. His teacher looks an awful lot like Snow White. His adopted mother resembles an Evil Queen and his therapist gives uncanny advice like Jiminy Cricket. Henry realizes that only the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming can break the curse so he goes to find Emma and bring her back to the town. He is successful and Emma starts to enmesh herself into the town and try to figure out just what is going on. Meanwhile, the viewer sees glimpses of the fantasy world and the backstory of the fantasy counterparts of the real-world characters. In other words, there is a fantasy Snow White and her modern counterpart Mary Margaret Blanchard who share the same characteristics except Mary Margaret has no idea she is actually Snow White.

Why it is AWESOME: It’s captivating. The fairytales have twists that you are not expecting but so does the modern world. It’s fun trying to figure out who is who and what they are doing in Storybrooke. Also, the backstory reveals are pretty awesome. It has fun elements as well as heartbreaking ones and some of the episodes just make you ache afterward, in a good way. Admittedly, the pilot didn’t have me hooked but once the series hits its stride, it is addictive.

How can you see it?: Hulu, baby!
