Theatre News — Sunday, 1st May 2011

  • Derek Jacobi begins performances as King Lear at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, in the Donmar Warehouse’s production.  Runs through June 5.  From Playbill Online.
  • It’s Awards Season!  Well, nomination season, anyway.  Among Outer Critics Circle Awards nominees are the accented War Horse, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Rylance, and Brian Bedford.  (Also Patina Miller, who is American, but comes to us from the West End production of Sister Act.)  Similar nods also in the Drama Desk nominations.
  • A second hat tip to Radcliffe for leading How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying to raise $271,916 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for this year’s Easter Bonnet event.
  • Look for Kevin Spacey to star in Richard III (directed by Sam Mendes) at London’s Old Vic this summer and New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music early next year, in the third season of the Bridge Project (a theatre project with the awesome idea of combining British and American actors in productions playing both sides of the Atlantic).  From What’s on Stage.
