Wings of Fire to be adapted for TV by Ava DuVernay, WBA

Wings of Fire seriesWarner Bros. Animation (WBA) and award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay are developing an animated family television series based on Wings of Fire, the best-selling book series by author Tui T. Sutherland. This fantasy book series, set in a world of dragons, is comprised of 15 novels, three graphic novels, and four short stories so far.

WBA will be producing the series with DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) as executive producer through her production company, ARRAY. Other executive producers are Dan Milano (Glitch Techs), Christa Starr, Tui T. Sutherland, and Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!).

Here is the official synopsis of the series:

“With more than nine million copies in print and available in 16 languages, the Wings of Fire book series is an epic adventure set in a world entirely ruled by dragons. Across two continents and 10 tribes, the series explores vicious wars, enduring friendships, and heroic quests that span generations of fascinating dragon characters.”

While this will be DuVernay’s first animation project, she currently has several others on her plate as producer including Queen Sugar, Cherish the Day, and DMZ, based on characters from DC. According to Collider, she’s also working on a film version of New Gods, also within the DC universe. DuVernay is keeping herself busy with all these interesting projects and is already making a name for herself as a producer of high quality content. Wings of Fire looks like a worthy addition to her portfolio so far.

For a better idea of the series, here is the synopsis of the first five books:

“A war has been raging between the dragon tribes of Pyrrhia for years. According to a prophecy, five dragonets will end the bloodshed and choose a new queen. But not every dragonet wants a destiny. And when Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny discover the truth about their unusual, secret upbringing, they might choose freedom over fate — and find a way to save their world in their own way.”
