WATCH: ‘American Horror Story’ Introduces Camp Redwood

With the ninth season of American Horror Story drawing closer, we now have a better idea of the ’80s-themed setting. In true slasher flick fashion—and leaning heavily into the Friday the 13th influence—American Horror Story: 1984 will take place at Camp Redwood. A seemingly picturesque, idyllic camp nestled deep in the woods, where you can sun yourself by the lake, make some friends…if you survive that long. Of course, the happy scenes in the latest teaser are interrupted by a knife-wielding person clad in all black whose face is hidden. They’re ready to terrorize the camp and up the body count.

This teaser (and the first one that debuted earlier this summer) feels a bit different than American Horror Story‘s usual ones. It’s built less on surreal imagery that’s typically in their themed teasers, imagery used to shock and scare, centered around the season’s theme. American Horror Story: 1984 has been more straightforward, evoking an actual story before we get the real season. The videos released a few weeks ago on Ryan Murphy’s Instagram introducing this season’s cast also followed this theme, with everyone in their jazzy ’80s attire and hanging around the interior of a cabin and what looked like a photo shoot.

While there will be a void this season with original cast members Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters sitting this one out, American Horror Story: 1984 has the most newcomers since the show’s debut. Matthew Morrison (Glee), Angelica Ross (Pose), Gus Kenworthy (yes, the Olympian), Zach Villa (Shameless), and DeRon Horton (Dear White People) will join American Horror Story veterans Emma Roberts, Cody Fern, Billie Lourd, and John Carroll Lynch (TURN: Washington’s Spies).

As usual, there’s already a lot of fan theories floating around, and there’s no doubt that astute American Horror Story fans will be picking apart the teaser, waiting for the next one. Check out the new teaser below! American Horror Story: 1984 premieres on September 18th on FX.
