REVIEW: Brooklyn Nine Nine S6 E 15 – Cinco de Mayo

This week on Brooklyn Nine Nine, it’s the return of the heist! These episodes have been a highlight for each of the last 5 seasons, and this season’s heist continued the trend.

The setup is relatively simple: Hitchcock’s loud (complete with a mariachi band) celebration of Cinco de Mayo seemingly gives Terry a headache on the day of his lieutenant exam. In order to distract Terry from his worries and stress eating, Jake suggests that they do the heist that day since their attempt on Halloween was ruined by a gas leak and a man getting injured (although Holt and Jake thought the man was faking). They agree to attempt to steal Scully’s bracelet monitor and lock him (and Hitchcock) in a room.

This year’s heist is so completely off the walls that recapping it is near impossible and frankly wouldn’t do it justice. Everyone is involved and are extremely into winning. There is backstabbing by practically everyone, secretly planning the event for months in Jake’s case, Rosa almost shipping Boyle to New Jersey (he got out by making the box wet, don’t ask any questions), Jake and Amy secretly buying the other tasers as Christmas gifts, Boyle faking his doppelganger Bill’s death, Scully and his twin (!!?!?) fighting, and so forth. Kevin even gets lassoed into the insanity inadvertently.

At the end of the insanity, Terry gets knocked out by a ceiling vent while Jake’s victory banner is on display. The squad wheels Terry to his exam via a shopping cart. Unfortunately, Terry isn’t in the condition to take the exam, so Jake volunteers (by force) to explain the situation to the exam proctors. However, the room is entirely empty to everyone’s confusion. It turns out that Terry set the whole situation up, manipulating everybody for months and even being behind the fake gas leak (the injured man was an actor for hire). Terry wins the heist and reveals that he became a Lieutenant weeks ago.

At Shaw’s the squad toasts Terry, but Holt notes that he’ll only be the winner for 6 months, to Jake and Amy’s approval.

The only subplot we have (and it’s not really a subplot) is Scully and his twin at odds because the twin slept with Scully’s wife.
