REVIEW: Shazam!

When people think about DC Comics, names like Wonder Woman, Superman, or Batman usually take prominence. But there’s another superhero in town and he deserves your attention. Shazam! is a breath of fresh air in the DCEU. The movie is directed by David F. Sandberg and written by Henry Gayden. It’s 130 minutes long and stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel, and Jack Dylan Grazer.

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93% (Certified Fresh)

Kathryn’s Rating: Loved it. Stay through the scroll. There are TWO end-credit scenes.

Originally dubbed Captain Marvel by creators C.C. Beck and Bill Parker at Fawcett Comics in the 1930s, the character was re-introduced to the world as Shazam by DC in the 1970s. Our movie follows the origin story of foster kid Billy Batson (Asher Angel) as he joins his new family and ultimately becomes the Wizard Shazam’s (Djimon Hounsou) champion. While Billy’s figuring out how to deal with his new powers, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) has devoted his life’s work to finding the entrance of the Rock of Eternity again. Before we spoil anything else, let’s just say things get a tiny bit complicated.

FAST FACTS

  • The prologue takes place in upstate New York in 1974. The rest of the movie takes place in present-day Philadelphia.
  • They balance the Batson and Sivana storylines really well.
  • There are references to other DC characters throughout the movie.
  • Heck, all of the Easter eggs in this movie are pretty fantastic. Pay attention to the details. Especially if you’re a fan of the comics.
  • Billy stays the same age when he transforms into Shazam. He just grows to his full potential.
  • The name Shazam is actually an acronym for the source of his powers. Let us know when you see it:
    • Wisdom of Solomon
    • Strength of Hercules
    • Stamina of Atlas
    • Power of Zeus
    • Courage of Achilles
    • Speed of Mercury
  • You’ll see the number 7 A LOT.
  • The Seven Deadly Sins have a huge role in this movie just as they did in Shazam lore.
  • It’s too early to tell if they’ll get the chance to work on a sequel but the mid-credit scene basically sets it up.
  • The last end-credit scene may or may not refer back to a fairly recent DCEU movie.

One of my favorite things about origin movies is that you don’t really have to know a lot about the comics in order to enjoy it. Especially for movie fans who might not be familiar with a storyline before they see it. While the knowledge helps, the creative team does a great job of bringing this story to life on the big screen. You won’t have any difficulty following along. It’s nice to see the formula changed up a bit every now and then. We really hope you give this movie a chance. Especially with a couple more superhero movies coming out in April. It’s a fun night out.
