WATCH: Hellboy Red Band Trailer – Let’s Try This Again

Lionsgate has revealed a new trailer for Hellboy, hoping to win fans back over after the disappointing reaction to the first trailer.

The first trailer for the new Hellboy reboot landed in January right before screenings of Glass, and the reaction was not what the studio had intended. Originally pitched as a darker more violent R-rated version than the two Guillermo Del Toro Hellboy films, the first trailer put none of that on display, and seemed to be more of a silly comedy in the vein of R.I.P.D.

Now just two months later, and with the release of the film on the horizon, a new trailer is out and it appears the studio is trying to live up to what they promise. A red brand trailer promising cursing, violence, and gore. One big notable contrast between this Hellboy and the previous two movies is in how the monsters are realized. Guillermo Del Toro used a lot of practical effects of men in suits with CGI enhancements, where here it appears that the filmmakers have gone for more over the top CGI. Even the blood in the film is CGI.

The director is Neil Marshall, who directed Dog Soldiers and The Descent, as well as episodes of Game of Thrones, Lost in Space, and Hannibal. The cast includes David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) as the villainous Blood Queen, Ian McShane (American Gods) as Trevor Bruttenholm, Sasha Lane (Hearts Beat Loud) as Alice Morgan, Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-0) as Ben Daimio, and Thomas Hayden Church (Sideways) as Lobster Johnson.

Hellboy will have some tough competition. Had they kept their original January release date they may have been able to take advantage of the slow film market, but now they are arriving a week after Shazam and two weeks before Avengers: Endgame opens.

Hellboy opens in theaters on April 12, 2019. What did you think of the trailer? Are you excited for Hellboy? Would you rather it be Hellboy 3? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
