The highly-anticipated adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s popular children’s series has a new teaser poster! Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which is being produced by Guillermo del Toro, is slated for release in August of this year. Now, we’re getting our first look at the film’s take on the series of creepy folklore tales. If you’ve grown up on the book series like many have, you’ll instantly recognize the terrifying figure in the poster. Yep, that’s Harold, the unsettling and homicidal scarecrow who’s also the titular character in one of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark‘s most infamous tales.

Those creepy illustrations are one thing, but to see the live action version of Harold is something else entirely. From this little teaser alone, we’re excited to see the film’s adaptation of these already gruesome and dark stories. Though it’ll likely stay age appropriate, this certainly gives the impression that the tone will stay the same. While much isn’t known about Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark yet, the plot is described as following “a group of teens who must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in their small town.” Harold is said to play an important role in the movie. The first trailer is due to drop this Sunday during the Super Bowl, so we won’t have to wait long to see whatever scares this film has in store. You may want to dust off your copies of the books to revisit these chilling tales in the meantime!

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is being directed by André Øvredal, with the screenplay written by Dan Hageman, Kevin Hageman, and Guillermo del Toro. It stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, Austin Zajur, and Natalie Ganzhorn.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will open in theaters on August 9, 2019.
