Black Canary and Huntress Cast in Birds of Prey

There is a certain level of excitement when a superhero role that has never been on film is cast for the first time. Remember when Chris Evans was first cast as Captain America? Or Gal Gadot was first cast as Wonder Woman? Exciting stuff. Now we get that for two legendary DC Heroes who are joining the universe.

Just days after Birds of Prey set a release date and a rumored actress shortlist was revealed, it appears Black Canary and Huntress have finally been cast.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell, who appeared on hit television shows like Underground and True Blood, landed the coveted role of Black Canary aka Dinah Drake. Black Canary is one of the best hand to hand fighters in the DC Universe, whose powers include her canary cry. She has been a prominent member of not just the Birds of Prey, but also the Justice League. The Black Canary mantle has been used by three different characters on the CW’s Arrow, played by Caity Lotz, Katie Cassidy, and Julian Harkavy. This will mark the character’s first appearance on film.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who has starred in films like Scott Pilgrim VS the World, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Sky High, will star as Huntress. Huntress has had numerous origins in the comics, including one where she is the daughter of Batman and Catwoman. The film’s version will be Helena Bertinelli, the daughter of a prominent mob boss. When her parents are killed she becomes a masked vigilante who hunts down the mafia. Huntress appeared on Arrow played by Jessica De Gouw.

The roles of Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain are still yet to be cast.

Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead will join Margot Robbie, who reprises her role as Harley Quinn. The film is based off the hit comic book series of the same name from DC Comics, with the most famous run being from Gail Simone. Cathy Yan will direct the film with a release set for February 7, 2020, and it will be the ninth installment in the DCEU aka Worlds of DC.
