Focus Features Teases New SciFi Thriller ‘Captive State’

Focus Features welcomes you to Captive State. It’s an ominous sounding message to match the glimpse of the teaser trailer for the film shared on Instagram. The preview for the teaser offers imagery akin to 1984 or Fahrenheit 451, with messages of “peace,” “unity,” and “harmony” while something sinister lurks around the edges. Set in Chicago, Captive State is a science fiction thriller about the aftermath of an alien invasion. It sounds like a familiar path to tread, but the story picks up nearly a decade following the invasion of this extraterrestrial force, and it’ll explore both sides of the conflict. The so-called “collaborators” and “dissidents.”

Directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Rise of the Planet of the Apes), who also wrote the screenplay alongside Erica Beeney (The Battle of Shaker Heights), Captive State stars John Goodman, Ashton Sanders (Moonlight), Jonathan Majors (White Boy Rick), Colson Baker (better known as Machine Gun Kelly), and Vera Farmiga. Focus Features also released a few teaser images, giving a first look at John Goodman’s stern-faced character Mulligan and protagonist Gabriel, played by Ashton Sanders. The images hint at the film’s world, with Gabriel in a crumbling brick building and being escorted while handcuffed. Mulligan, meanwhile, sits placidly in some kind of bunker or ship hooked up to a breathing apparatus. The most striking image of all, though, is Sanders’ Gabriel surrounded by blossoming red smoke on a city street. It’s an image that definitely grabs your attention right away—so we’ll see what the teaser trailer brings.

Captive State is set to release into theaters on March 29, 2019. Check out the preview for the teaser, and visit the film’s immersive website to dive deeper into Captive State‘s world.
