SDCC 2018: ‘Riverdale’ EPs Talk Josie McCoy and Barchie

Riverdale producers  Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater sat down at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss what’s in store for the show’s junior season, especially when it comes to fan favorite characters and ships.

When asked what the tone of season three would be like, Schechter noted that their beloved characters are only entering their junior year of high school, despite the grown-up drama the teens have been through. “I think that gives you a clue about the year,” Schechter said. “I think there’s a lot about responsibility [when it comes to] how you process.”

Schechter also noted that going into the new season, they aren’t going to introduce yet another masked killer. “We constantly want to do things that feel new and different, but as [engaging] as previous seasons,” she concluded.

Josie McCoy, played by Ashleigh Murray, has been a series regular for two seasons now. However, despite that fact, fans were left to pick up the pieces as the character hasn’t received much spotlight. This time, Schechter reassured fans that that will get a lot more of Josie in the new season.

“We have some very exciting plans for Josie this year. Ashleigh is just wildly talented,” Schechter said. She also teased that a new set was built that will “allow Josie to do a lot more singing, which I think we all want a lot more of.” Lastly, if you’re a Josie fan, Schechter guaranteed that you will be happy this year.

Barchie fans, rejoice! Schecter noted that “the very core” of the Archie Comics was the love triangle between Betty, Veronica and Archie. “The connection that Archie and Better have, from having growing up — there’s a very special place in their hearts for the other, and timing is everything.”

Season 3 of Riverdale premieres Wednesday, October 10th at 9/8c on the CW.
