On the second day of SDCC, Star Trek arrived in dramatic fashion as fans were treated with a sneak peek of Star Trek: Discovery at the show’s panel with the cast and executive producers. Though the highly-anticipated second season isn’t due to premiere until early 2019, the first trailer was dropped to tease the show’s stunning and action-packed next adventure. The trailer is a lot of fun; full of thrilling sequences with a blend of humor, heart, and plenty of mystery. After a strong first season, it looks like the second installment of Star Trek: Discovery will be even more ambitious and visually spectacular. A well-known character from the Original Series even makes a debut, and we have to say we’re really excited for his addition to the show.

Discovery co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman—who also directed the second season premiere—also revealed Star Trek: Short Treks, a series of standalone episodes that will debut monthly this fall leading up to the second season. Each mini episode will run about 10 to 15 minutes, giving the series a bit of extra time to expand on the characters in the show and explore new parts of the show’s universe. Rainn Wilson will direct and star in a short about Harry Mudd. Aldis Hodge will feature in another short as a man named Craft, where he’ll find himself alone on a deserted ship. Other episodes are planned to dig deeper into the backstories of Saru (Doug Jones), Starfleet’s first Kelpien, and Ensign Tilly’s (Mary Wiseman) journey aboard the U.S.S. Discovery.

“There is no shortage of compelling stories to tell in the Star Trek universe that inspire, entertain, and either challenge our preconceived ideas or affirm long held beliefs, and we are excited to broaden the universe already with Short Treks,” Kurtzman said. “Each episode will deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come on in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes. They’ll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek.”

Star Trek Discovery is slated to return sometime in early 2019 exclusively on CBS All Access. Check out the first trailer for the second season below!
