In past seasons, American Horror Story titles have always inspired the right amount of intrigue and speculation, and Season 8 of the anthology horror series appears to be no different. American Horror Story: Apocalypse will be the show’s latest installment, unveiled in its usual fashion with creepy, bizarre teaser images that play on the series’ typical surrealism. The posters feature the stark red-and-black color scheme reminiscent of the posters from Murder House, the first season of American Horror Story.

Series creator Ryan Murphy has been vague on the finer details of the latest season—and really, the suspense that fuels fan theories paired with the horrific poster art is kind of always the best part of American Horror Story‘s appeal. Every season is hit or miss, some unfolding better than others. While the story doesn’t always land and the plot is sometimes more silly than terrifying, the unique settings and characters help carry the seasons. Murphy has teased in the past that Apocalypse will be a crossover between Murder House and Coven. Now that the teaser art has been revealed, there’s a good chance that the plot could center on the demon baby/Antichrist born in the season finale of Murder House. How that ties into the witches of Coven, we’ve yet to find out.

Characters from both seasons are set to appear, promising a star-studded cast of fan-favorite actors. Several familiar names we’ve come to see across American Horror Story‘s anthologies have already been confirmed (Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Adina Porter, and Billie Lourd among them), but others are just rumor at this point. It’s clear they’re keeping the big surprises under wraps.

“It’s a season unlike anything we’ve ever done because there’s a big hook to it,” Murphy told EW. “There’s a huge thing that happens in episode five. […] It’s very high concept.”

American Horror Story: Apocalypse will premiere on September 12 on FX.  Tell us your theories about the upcoming season in the comments!
