WATCH: Trailer for the Shogun World episode of Westworld

Westworld Shogun world3A short trailer and a bunch of new photos have been released for the much-awaited episode of Westworld set in Shogun World and shot in Japanese.

The fifth episode of the second season is titled “Akane no Mai” and will be filmed mostly in Japanese with English subtitles. This will probably continue from where episode 3 left off, with Maeve and her group ambushed by a Japanese warrior. Shogun World is the third themed world that has appeared on the show so far, after the introduction of Raj World a few episodes ago.

Showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have previously discussed their excitement about setting the episode in Japan and their love for Japanese cinema. Nolan said:

“We want to try and gently temper expectations. Most of our season is spent in Westworld — the eponymous Westworld. But we do get a chance to glimpse some of the other worlds. And we have a couple of episodes that are spent in Shogun World with one of our storylines, while our other storylines continue elsewhere. So I say we’re trying to temper expectations, except to say that I think the stuff we did for Shogun World is spectacular.”

Westworld Shogun world4The new images feature some main cast members in feudal Japanese attire including Maeve (played by Thandie Newton) and Hector (played by Rodrigo Santoro). IGN reports that we will also get our first glimpse of new cast members Hiroyuki Sanada (47 Ronin) and Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim).

Collider reports that the short teaser is rightly called “A New World”. In the brief clip, we see Maeve echoing the words of Rinko Kikuchi’s character, saying: “In this world, you can be whatever you want to be.”

From the little we’ve seen so far, Shogun World looks gorgeous, epic and vivid, with the same meticulous attention to detail done with the main park. It’s clear that this episode will be a treat to fans of classic Japanese cinema as well as sci-fi.

“I  think I’m finding a new voice,” Maeve declares gravely, “Now, we use it.”

Westworld airs every Sunday on HBO.
