Fear the Walking Dead, S4 Ep2 - Another Day in the Diamond

After last week’s unusual premiere, Fear the Walking Dead shifted the focus back to the Clark family, featuring a significant time-jump to all of them being reunited after surviving the explosion of the dam last season.

Fear the Walking Dead, S4 Ep2 - Another Day in the DiamondLuckily for the Clarks, they have found a new haven in the crazy world, with secure walls, ample food supply, and even indoor plumbing! They’re all living in a happy community now, though how they all managed to find each other again was not yet explained in this episode. But given how these idyllic communities usually play out in shows like Fear the Walking Dead, the peace and harmony never lasts too long.

First, Madison, Alicia, Luciana, and Strand go on a mission beyond their boundaries to try and find the surviving relatives of a new arrival, a young girl named Charlie. Here, after killing a few, gross walkers, they stumble upon Naomi (played by Jenna Elfman) whom they bring back with them to the baseball stadium they now call home.

One of the biggest mysteries about the Clarks at this moment is what happened to Nick. The once fearless and reckless character now prefers to stay behind closed walls, in some measure of safety. His mother, sister, and girlfriend let him be because they know he needs this. It makes me wonder what horrors such a usually gutsy character had to face, what level of trauma he suffered for him to have been reduced to this state. But with a new threat looming on the horizon, in the form of the Vultures (honestly, the antagonists on these shows always have to have some catchy name like Wolves, Saviors, etc.), Nick will have to get back to his old self so that he can help his family survive.

Fear the Walking Dead, S4 Ep2 - Another Day in the DiamondSo Charlie turned out to be a spy for the enemy camp, trading information about the community with the cool and sinister leader of the Vultures. And presumably, she’s also the one who sabotaged their crops with weevils.

Who would have thought that weevils and turnips would be such big plot points in a show about the zombie apocalypse? But then again, a steady food supply is vital to survival so the weevils may have caused more harm than a horde of walkers.

Fear the Walking Dead, S4 Ep2 - Another Day in the DiamondThe Vultures are determined to wait until the community eventually capitulates. But knowing Madison, she will not go down without a fight. But how they intend to fight this formidable foe remains to be seen.

The episode ends by picking up we left Morgan and his new friends, now at the mercy of the angry Clarks. Having found one of the Vultures’ painted flags in the back of Althea’s truck, the Clarks suspect the worst. Clearly they’ve already been through hell before this. How they managed to escape their enemies and how the experience hardened them all is the journey we look forward to following on Fear the Walking Dead.
