WATCH: Benedict Cumberbatch in the Patrick Melrose trailer

Patrick Melrose posterBenedict Cumberbatch stars in the television adaptation of the Melrose novels, playing the titular Patrick Melrose in the first trailer released by Showtime.

As previously reported, Cumberbatch will be playing the protagonist of Edward St. Aubyn’s semi-autobiographical five-novel series. He has called this one of his dream roles. Earlier this year, he appeared in an adaptation of Ian McEwan’s The Child in Time, and he will, of course, be reprising his role as Dr. Strange in The Avengers: Infinity War.

The Melrose series is comprised of five novels: Never Mind (1992), Bad News (1992), Some Hope (1994), Mother’s Milk (2005), and At Last (2012). Each episode will be based on one book.

Here is the official synopsis of Patrick Melrose:

“Based on the acclaimed Patrick Melrose series of novels written by Edward St. Aubyn and adapted by BAFTA award nominee David Nicholls (Far From the Madding Crowd, One Day), Melrose gleefully skewers the British upper class as it tracks the titular characters harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood, through adult substance abuse and ultimately, towards recovery and redemption. Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Sherlock) plays Patrick Melrose, an aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy, who struggles to overcome the damage inflicted by an abusive father and a mother who tacitly condoned the behaviour.

Patrick MelroseA true television saga, Melrose is both gripping and humorous, with a dramatic sweep that encompasses the South of France in the 1960s, debauched 1980s New York and sober Britain in the early 2000s. Melrose will devote an hour to each of the five novels, with each episode storytelling a few complicated and intense days in Patrick’s life.”

According to Collider, the show was adapted by David Nicholls and also stars Hugo Weaving, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Anna Madeley, Allison Williams and Blythe Danner.

Patrick Melrose will premiere on May 12 on Showtime.
