WATCH: Sony Unveils First Teaser for ‘Venom’

After revealing the first official poster just yesterday, Sony Pictures has now unveiled the first teaser trailer for their upcoming Marvel property, Venom. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, whose previous films include Zombieland and Gangster Squad, Venom stars Tom Hardy (Dunkirk) as Eddie Brock, a man who is given special abilities after being merged with an alien symbiote.

The film also stars Riz Ahmed (Rogue One) and Michelle Williams (The Greatest Showman), and it’s been rumored that Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Tom Holland may appear as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. While Venom is a Marvel character brought to the big screen with deep roots in the Spider-Man mythos, it’s unclear how much, or even if, Venom will draw any connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The teaser for Venom is exactly that, a teaser. While we do see the actual alien symbiote briefly, and what appears to be a crashed alien ship, the teaser doesn’t show Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock in his full Venom get-up. It also appears that Venom will be taking more cues from the Flash Thompson character rather than the Eddie Brock character. In the comics, Flash Thompson became Agent Venom after losing his legs in the Iraq War. Flash Thompson also appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming portrayed by Tony Revolori (Dope). While Tom Hardy’s legs are still intact in this teaser, a former accident disabling him is somewhat implied. Eddie Brock was last portrayed on the big screen by Topher Grace in the critically panned Spider-Man 3.
