Lucy Liu To Direct ‘Luke Cage’ S2 Premiere

When Mike Colter’s bulletproof superhero returns (in his own show, that is, rather than Marvel’s The Defenders), that first episode will be directed by Lucy Liu. Liu, more well-known as an actress in such movies as Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels, also has experience directing television. She has been behind the camera for a few episodes of her CBS show Elementary.

As io9 reports, Liu comments,

What a thrill to collaborate with Marvel and Netflix, two industry titans, who paint our world with inspiring stories and beguiling characters. It is such an honor to work with such a passionate and fearless team.”

Executive producer Jeph Loeb also spoke about Liu’s directing. He stated,

When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof director. Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story, and an obvious love of actors. She is rocking Luke Cage 2.”

This intriguing news comes after reports have begun to surface about villains that we can expect to see in the show’s upcoming season. Mustafa Shakir has been announced to be starring as John McIver, who is described as a charismatic and vengeance-seeking criminal mastermind. Comic book fans may recognize McIver as the villain called Bushmaster. Gabrielle Dennis will also star, playing Dr. Tilda Johnson, who may appear harmless, but her genius turns toward criminality. Tilda Johnson is also known from the comics as Nightshade.

Luke Cage will be seen first on The Defenders, which will be available on Neftlix starting August 18. The season 2 premiere of his own show is expected to air sometime in 2018.
