Disney considering a live-action Little Mermaid

disney little mermaidThe next Disney animated classic that could get a live-action treatment is The Little Mermaid, according to a report by Empire online.

After the recent successes of The Jungle Book, Cinderella, and Maleficent, Disney has many more plans for adapting films from its animated canon into live. Alice Through the Looking Glass and Pete’s Dragon are the upcoming releases but many more are currently in development.

And with the positive reception of the Beauty and the Beast teaser trailer, which beat the record of Star Wars: The Force Awakens for most number of views for a teaser, live-action adaptations are becoming a true recipe for success for Disney. The films do not lose their appeal despite the transition to live and then, they get to be updated for a new generation to enjoy while the older generation can appreciate some new approaches to their childhood memories.

While the report warns that there is no official development for The Little Mermaid yet, there are talks that company bosses have an idea about the film and are deciding how they are going to implement it. There have also apparently been discussions with certain producers about the concept. So we may yet see a live version of Ariel and Prince Eric sometime in the future, hopefully complete with new renditions of the memorable songs from the film such as “Part of your World” and “Under the Sea.”

If this adaptation pushes through, it will not be the first incarnation of The Little Mermaid coming to the big screen. Universal and Working Title also have their own live version of the classic fairy tale with Chloe Grace Moretz (Hugo, Kick Ass, If I Stay, The 5th Wave) set to star, with Rebecca Thomas as director and Richard Curtis as script writer.
