Welcome back to our screens (well in 2016) Matt Smith! He’s joining The Crown on Netflix.

Netflix is loading up the cast for its new series The Crown, as Matt Smith – the Eleventh Doctor Who – joins up as Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh. The series, a decades-spanning story centered on Queen Elizabeth II and the Prime Ministers who helped shape post-war Britain, will premiere in 2016.

Other cast members announced include Claire Foy, who will play Queen Elizabeth II, and John Lithgow, as Sir Winston Churchill.

The Crown is written by Peter Morgan, who wrote 2006’s The Queen, and was inspired by the award-winning West End Play The Audience.

Each season of The Crown is expected to explore a different chapter of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
