NYCC Exclusive: The Sleepy Hollow Cast

What can we expect in future episodes of Fox’s Sleepy Hollow? We sat down with Sleepy Hollow creators Alex Kurtzman and Len Wiseman, and cast members Nicole Beharie (Abbie Mills) and Orlando Jones (Captain Irving), and Tom Mison (Ichabod Crane) and Katia Winter (Katrina Crane) at New York Comic Con 20213 to get a closer look at the new hit show. Teasers ahead!

So, what’s going to keep us coming back for the modern day Legend of Sleepy Hollow/Book of Revelation mashup?

Fans will be happy to know that a lot of what’s coming will include more character development, broader flashbacks, and lots of backstory, not just to further develop Abbie and Ichabod, but also to give more insight into characters such as Captain Irving (whose ex wife and daughter will soon be entering the picture), Katrina, and even the Headless Horseman. We can expect lots more monsters too, including Sleepy Hollow versions of a scarecrow and a golem — and expect the future monsters to be just as ingrained into the story as the Sandman.

“Sandman was literally a manifestation of Abbie’s past — of her guilt and of something she hadn’t dealt with,” Kurtzman said. “We really try and take the approach with our monsters of not just being random monsters, but actually having them echo something in our characters and what they’re going through.”

The recurring, blurry horned demon who’s been giving viewers nightmares since episode 1 will become progressively clearer as the characters learn more about it.

Jones showed that his devotion to the fandom is not just lip service — he even gave us a fic rec: the iPhone fic Tea Time by cleolinda!  He compared the interactivity of social media to the immediacy of the theater, and shows no sign of stopping:

“It’s nice to break the fourth wall and mess with fans a bit,” said Jones, “because I think the assumption has always been that we don’t know anything about that world and that the fanfiction world and shipping and all the terms that go along with it are alien to the actors. And that may very well be, but it’s not alien to us.”

Women-driven plots will continue to dominate, including Katrina’s, who, we will find, holds many of the answers Ichabod and Abbie seek.

“I love that all of these women on the show are actually an integral part of saving the world,” said Beharie. “They’re not just a piece to move the story on and not just batting eyelashes — we’re helping to make things happen, if not actually making them happen.”

And what about On-Star Lady Yolanda? Will we see more of her? If Mison had a say, he jokes, she’d be a regular:

“I’d like to see [Yolanda] become a recurring character. She could be like Ziggy on Quantam Leap. Any time he needs advice but can’t find Katrina, he just goes and talks to Yolanda.”

Hey, it’s actually not a bad idea.
