Tools of the Trade:
The Colt: Created by Samuel Colt himself, who was a hunter in the old west, the Colt and its magic bullets supposedly can kill anything supernatural. John Winchester took it from a group of vampires, who had stolen it from another hunter, Daniel Elkins, when they killed him. But John then traded it in a demon deal for Dean’s life and it passed into the hands of Azazel. The Colt also happened to be the key to a gateway to Hell called a devil’s gate, one that Samuel Colt had locked shut, and Azazel used it to release hundreds of demons. Sam and Dean picked it up during the fight with Azazel after the opening of the gate and Dean used the last bullet to kill him. All was not lost, though, because Ruby fixed the gun so that it could still work without its special bullets. But then Bella Talbot stole it and tried to use it as leverage to get her soul back. The Colt ended up in Crowley’s possession, and later he gave it back to Sam and Dean to try to kill Lucifer. However, Lucifer revealed that there were five things in existence that the gun couldn’t kill and he was one of them.
Ruby’s Knife: A magic knife that can kill demons, Ruby carried it but its origin is unknown. Sam and Dean used it when they were allies with Ruby, and when she revealed her true loyalties they killed her with it. They now own it and put it to frequent use.
Devil’s Trap: A magical symbol that can trap a demon when it walks into it. All you need to do is hide it under a carpet and lure a demon into the perfect spot. Works great on the ceiling too, trapping any demons that walk under it. Conveniently, they fall for it all the time.
Holy Water: Exactly what it says on the tin. Holy water works great on demons, burning them in a way that doesn’t harm the host body. All you need is to place a rosary in water, say a Latin incantation, and you’ve got some fresh homemade holy water.
Iron: Iron can dispel ghosts, but only for a brief period of time. Luckily, when ghosts are around everything seems to be made from iron.
Salt: Not just a way to make French fries extra tasty, salt can protect you from ghosts and keep out demons. Just block every entrance with a line of salt and ghosts and demons can’t cross it. When they’re already inside the house, just make a circle of salt around yourself and you’ve got a little island of safety—until they use their powers to blow the salt away.
Dean’s Amulet: Bobby gave Sam an amulet to give to John as a present one Christmas when he was a boy. But John didn’t show up, so Sam gave it to Dean instead. Little else was known about the amulet, other than the fact that Dean never seemed to take it off, until Castiel revealed it to be a special talisman that will burn hot in the presence of God. Dean lent it to Castiel, but Castiel gave it back later when he became disillusioned with God. Dean, himself disillusioned with pretty much everything, tossed the amulet into the trash.
The Impala: Last but not least, Dean’s black 1967 Chevy Impala is The Car That Saved the World. No matter how many times it gets crashed into and almost demolished, Dean always fixes his baby back up. Bought by John Winchester in his youth, with a little push from a time traveling Dean, the car passed to Dean when he was old enough and has been the closest thing the Winchester brothers have known as a home. During Lucifer and Michael’s big showdown, Sam’s memories of the good times in the Impala with his brother gave him enough power to overcome Lucifer and lock him back in the cage.
