Theatre News — Sunday, 8th May 2011

  • The Tony nominations came out this week.  Leading the “surprise omissions” list are Daniel Radcliffe and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.  British import War Horse picked up five nominations (plus a special award for the Handspring Puppet Company).  Jerusalem, another British import, has six nominations, including actors Mark Rylance and Mackenzie Crook.
  • Hugh Jackman began his two-week concert run at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre.  To my great surprise, tickets are still available.
  • The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles (formerly Shakespeare Festival/LA) presents its annual celebrity reading fundraiser on Monday, May 9.  Participants in this “lil’ bit country” style Merry Wives of Windsor include Kenneth Branagh, Eric Idle, Tracey Ullman, and many others … but how can you possibly miss William Shatner as Falstaff?
